Luke is undertaking a Bachelor of Marine Science majoring in Sustainable Marine Management at Deakin University. His strong intention is to progress to an Honours year or Master’s Degree.
Having completed his Apprenticeship and worked as a carpenter in Melbourne, Luke is now committed to a career in environmental education and conservation, combining his passion for scientific knowledge, community engagement and writing. He considers environmental advocacy and education as critical to the transition to sustainable future economies.
Luke demonstrated leadership in this area at high school, advocating for greater attention to climate change. He is currently volunteering with Oceanmind as a Surf Mentor, where he is able to share his passion and knowledge about local marine environments and mindfulness, whilst helping build his mentees’ self-esteem and confidence.
Luke has demonstrated high academic performance; a balanced and articulate commitment to sustainable marine ecology and conservation; and a balanced and cogent philosophy of life. With his humility and strength of character, the Panel considered that Luke will make a significant contribution to Australia’s future. The Scholarship will also allow Luke to focus more on his studies, allowing him to realize his vision for the future.
Luke’s Scholarship was donated by the Order of Australia Association.
Luke’s mentor is Professor Emma Johnston AO, a leading authority on marine ecology. She is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Sydney and a Non-Executive Director of the CSIRO.
